About a third of the route lies along the top of the seawall built after the 2011 disasters, a recre-ational boon owed to the creative thinking of coastal residents. While seawalls are a necessary defense against storm surges and tsunami, many members of the Hamadori coastal community weren’t willing to set-tle for having their ocean views and access completely blocked. It’s not only fishermen, after all, who enjoy their daily connection to the sea.On a fine-weather day in the Hamadori area of Fukushi-ma Prefecture, when a light breeze teases the air and the sea sparkles in the sun, it’s a perfect time to hit the saddle for a ride along the white-sand beaches of the Iwaki Nanahama Kaido Cycling Road.Extending some 53 kilometers along the Pacific The views atop the seven- or eight-meter-high wall are exceptional, and the smooth road surface and sea breezes add to the joy of the ride. Where the route joins vehicular traffic, thoughtfully placed signs keep cyclists on course. Several cycling stations are set up en route, and there are plenty of inviting places to stop along the way. You can fill out your ride with a swim at the beach, or with visits to any of a number of tourist spots.outcrop rising 73 meters above the sea, is the Shioya-saki lighthouse—one of just 16 left in Japan that can be entered and climbed. A spiral staircase will take you to the lantern room at its top. If your timing is right, the cape is an excellent place to catch the gorgeous red hues of a classic Pacific Ocean sunset.Onahama Port boasts one of the biggest aquariums in the Tohoku region, Aquamarine Fukushima. Here, the marine life and ecosystems of Fukushima are the focus. Its central attraction is the Sea of Shiome, two vast tanks that represent the merging of warm northbound and cold southbound currents off the prefectural coast, and the fish and aquatic plant life that thrive in this spe-cial environment.
